Inflation Reduction Act

  • Subsidized ACA
  • It was to expire in 202, but now extended into 2025. So it was more of an extension than an accomplishment
  • lowered Prescription drug prices
  • added investment into clean energy
  • August 9, 2022
  • $280 billion for domestic reserach and manufacturing of semiconductors in the US
  • $39 billion in subsidies for chip manufacturing
  • $13 billion for research and training
  • Before act passed
    • Samsung and Intel investing in manufacturing factories in the US
      • Also GlobalFoundries and Texas Instruments I guess
        • TODO: The fuck does TI do?
  • After act passed
    • Wolfspeed announced it will build the world’s largest silicon carbide semiconductor plant in North Carolina
    • Micron Technology, TSMC, Texas Instruments, Integra, Bosch, Mersen all making plants in the US
  • Biden’s gonna make “tech hubs”, whatever that means
  • This + Inflation Reduction Act created ~104,000 jobs
  • California probably won’t make any new manufacturing
    • One factor is unreliable water supplies. I’m guessing because all they have is salt water from the ocean?
    • But then Applied Materials said they’re gonna make some research and development center here anyways? $4 billion and 2,000 jobs, not too shabby Fighting climate
  • smuggled it into the IRA but fuck it still good Bipartisan Safer Communities Act
  • name is a misnomer - Rubio (R) wrote the bill, and it passed the senate unanimously, but it went back and forth, ultimately getting 234-193 vote (all 220 D, only 14/207 R)
  • added funding to medicare for mental health services, particularly in schools
  • requires all medicare/medicaid services to provide telehealth services
  • implemented mental health system checks, school safety programs, gun control laws
  • extended background checks for <21 year olds
  • partial closure of the boyfriend loophole
    • allows physically abusive ex-romantic partners/stalkers with previous convictions/restraining orders to access guns
    • previously only applied to spouse or cohabitant, or if they share a child
    • BSCA denies them access for 5 years in “dating relationships”
    • doesn’t apply to restraining orders

No research!

  • Restraint in U-R and in K-I
  • Very messy, but at least he finally got out of Afghanistan
    • Weak point imo, not convincing
  • r/economicCollapse - Yup
